*Crime falls in the rarest of rare category, only deserves death sentence: Judge.

Nine months after that cold December night when a 23-year-old woman was raped on a moving bus, a crime so heinous it cut short a promising young life and shocked an entire nation, a fast-track court handed the death penalty to the four men convicted of the act.

“The convicts shall be hanged by the neck till they are dead,” additional sessions judge Yogesh Khanna said, bringing the sevenmonth-long trial to a close. The men were pronounced guilty on Tuesday. Gym instructor Vinay Sharma, 20, fruit seller Pawan Gupta, 19, and bus cleaner Akshay Thakur, 28, howled in anguish while fellow convict Mukesh Singh, 26, stood stunned with folded hands.

An equally dramatic response came from defence counsel AP Singh, who yelled at the judge: “You have not upheld the truth but lies. This decision has been taken under political pressure and for vote bank politics.”

*Petrol price up by ` 2.06, but expect a cut soon

Oil firms on Friday announced a 1.63 a litre hike in petrol prices. After VAT, petrol prices in Mumbai will go up by

2.06 and will cost 83.63 a litre from Saturday.

This hike comes less than two weeks after petrol prices were raised by 2.35 a litre (without taxes) on September 1.

Oil firms justified the hike after the average international price of petrol in the first 13 days of September went up from $114.44 a barrel to $117.40 as the rupee depreciated against the dollar from 63.88 to 66.02.

A cut in petrol prices had been expected on September 15 or 16, the scheduled date for fortnightly revisions, on the back of an appreciating rupee over the past few days. However, oil firms advanced the date and announced the hike after factoring in the rupee’s depreciation in the early part of the month. But the good news is that if the rupee continues to climb and dollar price per barrel lowers, oil firms are likely to cut prices by next fortnight.
